The Freightliner M915-series truck tractor is the U.S. Army’s primary line-haul prime mover. It tows M871, M872 and M1062 semitrailers carrying containers, palletized cargo, bulk water, and petroleum products over highway-style routes. The M915A3 covered in this workshop manual is the third-generation update with a Detroit Diesel 12.7L DDEC IV engine, Allison HD 4560P automatic transmission, and 4-channel WABCO ABS — purpose-built for sustained 65 mph operation at full 80,000 lb GCWR over Class I roads.
The M915A3 is built by Freightliner LLC (now Daimler Truck North America) under U.S. Army contract, based on a Freightliner conventional Class 8 cab and chassis configured to military specification. The drivetrain combines a Detroit Diesel Series 60 engine (also a Daimler subsidiary at the time) with an Allison HD 4560P transmission. The later M915A5 is the fifth-generation replacement built on a Western Star 4900 platform, but the M915A3 covered in this manual remains in active U.S. Army service.
The M915A3 is rated for 65 mph at full 80,000 lb GCWR on Class I roads, with a cruising range of approximately 400 miles and the ability to climb a 20% grade fully loaded. It operates from -25°F to +125°F (down to -40°F with the Arctic Kit) and has a 20-inch fording capability. Reliability is supported by a 52,000 lb GVWR chassis, RT 40-145P rear tandem axles, and the Detroit Diesel Series 60 — one of the most proven heavy-duty diesel platforms ever built. This workshop manual contains the full PMCS schedule and 236 work packages of repair procedures to keep it that way.
The M915A3 has a Gross Vehicle Weight Rating (GVWR) of 52,000 lb (23,608 kg) and is designed as a 6×4 prime mover with a Gross Combined Weight Rating (GCWR) of 80,000 lb when coupled to a semitrailer. Maximum towed load on the kingpin is 30,000 lb. The two-way oscillating sliding fifth wheel accepts a standard 2-inch kingpin. Curb-to-curb turning diameter is 53 ft 9 in. Full vehicle dimensions, axle weights, and load distribution data are documented in the Equipment Description section of this workshop manual.
Yes. This workshop manual contains a dedicated DDEC engine troubleshooting work package (WP 0007 00) covering DDEC III/IV fault codes, Check Engine Lights (CEL), Stop Engine Lights (SEL), and step-by-step Diagnostic Data Reader (DDR) procedures via the Diagnostic Data Link (DDL) connector. The full DDEC III/IV wiring diagram is included as a foldout (FO-1). Detroit Diesel Data Link diagnostic CD-ROM and SPORT computer procedures are also referenced. This is the same diagnostic information used by Freightliner-trained heavy-truck technicians.
This is the Unit Maintenance Manual (TM 9-2320-302-20) issued in May 2001 — not the Operator’s Manual (TM 9-2320-302-10) or the Parts Manual (TM 9-2320-302-24P). The Unit Maintenance Manual is the workshop-level service publication containing 236 work packages and approximately 1,898 pages of troubleshooting, repair, replacement and adjustment procedures used by mechanics. It is the most comprehensive of the M915A3 technical manuals for anyone actually working on the truck.
